Choicer Voicer online? Play the free browser alternative

There is no official online version of The Choicer Voicer — it is a $5 game you download for Windows or Linux. dubcircus is a free dubbing game that runs in your browser, with hundreds of its community packs ready to play. Same idea, nothing to install.

dubcircus is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to The Choicer Voicer or its developer.

What is The Choicer Voicer?

The Choicer Voicer is a voice acting party game by an independent developer, sold on itch.io for Windows and Linux. It plays a short clip from a film, a cartoon or a game with the original voices muted, shows you the line, and records you saying it. When the clip is over, it plays your version back over the video. It is still in alpha, and the developer sells it for $5.

The scenes come from its community. Players cut clips into packs, upload them to GameBanana, and everyone else downloads and installs them by hand. Thousands of packs exist, and the game became popular through streamers playing them on Twitch and YouTube, one absurd line at a time.

There is no official browser version. The websites that carry the game's name are not the developer's, and neither is dubcircus. What dubcircus shares with the game is the idea: hear a line, say it in your own voice, watch it play back over the scene. What it changes is where that happens: in a browser tab, for free, with the packs already loaded.

How to play a Choicer Voicer-style game online

  1. Pick a scene. More than 1,000 are ready to play, including hundreds of the community packs, sorted by how often they have been dubbed. Or paste a YouTube link and dubcircus makes your own scene in about a minute, separating the voices from the music and splitting the lines for you.
  2. Hear the line, then record it. Before anything is recorded you hear the first line in the original voice, and only then does the site ask for your microphone. You record one line at a time, and every recording is saved the moment you finish it, so a closed tab costs you nothing.
  3. Watch it back and share it. At the end the dub plays over the video with your voice on every character. It gets its own page you can send to anyone, and you can download the MP4. No account is needed for any of it.

Three ways to play on dubcircus

Alone
You play every character. The recording screen walks you through the lines in order, shows who is speaking, and lets you hear the original before each one. You do not hear your own dub until the end, which is where most of the laughs come from.
In a room with friends
Open a room and read out its code. Up to eight people join from their own devices, each on their own microphone, with no signup. Everyone records every line of the scene at once, nobody hears anybody until the playback, and the room votes for a winner after each scene. The host builds the scene list, and a room stays open for seven days.
On stream
Streamer mode connects to your Twitch channel read-only, without asking for any permissions. Your chat scores every dub out of five by typing a number, the game keeps its own scoreboard, and you can put scenes up for chat to vote on. It runs in the same browser tab as the game.

Community packs ready to play

A pack is a scene made ready for dubbing: the clip, the lines with their timings, and the characters who say them. The community made thousands of them for The Choicer Voicer. Hundreds of those are already on dubcircus as scenes, so the ones you know from streams play here in the browser, without a download or an install step.

Microphone help

Recording happens in your browser, so the browser has to allow the microphone for this site. The first time you start a scene, the site plays you the first line, and a Turn on mic button sits where the record button goes. Press it and say yes when the browser asks. A green dot then moves with your voice, so you know it works before you record for real.

If you blocked it once, the browser remembers. Open the site permissions from the icon left of the address bar, allow the microphone for dubcircus.io, and press the button again. In Safari the same setting lives under the Safari menu, in the settings for this website. Nothing is lost while you do this.

If the green dot does not move when you talk, another app may be holding the microphone, or the browser is listening to the wrong device. Close anything else using the mic, or pick the right input in the browser's settings, then try again. Recording also needs a secure connection, which dubcircus always uses.

Phones work, but a laptop or desktop with a headset records most cleanly. Phone browsers differ in how they record, and a headset keeps the original line out of your recording.
